Jedao stares at him for a moment, then closes his eyes, taking a slow, deep breath. He lets go of Varker's hand and folds his own hands (bare, he's so aware of them now even though he usually goes bare, he's not a real Kel, he hasn't earned those gloves - but he certainly has more right to them than Varker, who - Jedao gave them to. Because he wanted to help. Because Varker is a friend.)

When he speaks, his voice is quiet, earnest, steady.

"I want you to feel good in your body. I'm glad that's working. But this is actually extremely intimate for me, and if you want it to be a sex game, you do have to buy me dinner first."

Varker stares back, watching him as he pulls away.

He could get frustrated, is inclined to it, but instead he reclines back against the couch, crossing one leg over the other and almost boredly responds with, "you started it. It isn't my fault you got ahead of yourself." He sucks his teeth, considering keeping with the frankly dickish response before sighing and slipping off one glove, and then the next, holding them out to Jedao.

"I-" he clears his throat before trying again, looking anywhere but at him, "I can't play like that anyways, so I shouldn't try. Not... not until I can actually follow through. I dont need to have another fucking breakdown because you give me bedroom eyes and the part of me that forgets I can't takes it as a challenge."

God, he needs a drink.

Jedao takes a couple gulps of air.

"I know it's not your fault. I thought I could just...treat them pragmatically." And maybe he could have, if the memories of intimacy weren't so fresh, if Varker hadn't leaned into teasing him immediately.

He takes the gloves back - subtle but careful about not brushing Varker's bare skin - and clutches them to his chest for a moment.

"You could. If you wanted to. But it's...I haven't given any of my lovers my gloves. They stay with Hakkai when I go play." And even Hakkai doesn't wear them. He kind of pulled Varker onto sixth base without telling him, just because it seemed like it might help his dysphoria. Which, in Jedao's defense, it did.

He takes another fortifying breath, and looks back at Varker with a small, grateful smile.

"So, what color did you want for yours?"

Varker isnt an idiot, he can understand what Jedao is saying he did and he rests his head against the couch back, staring at the ceiling.

Young men would be the death of him for the idiotic leaps of faith they were able to take.

"God, you're an idiot." Does it make him like Jedao any less for being a risk taker? No, he admires what he cannot be, but christ.

"Black, probably. Thats neutral, would go with most things."

"I don't regret it," Jedao says honestly. A tiny bit of humiliation and awkwardness is a small price to pay to know that it works, that there is a way he can help. And Varker did back off when Jedao needed him to.

"You might have." He grumbles, finally pushing himself up off the couch and bringing his plate of cookies with him.

Stopping in front of the liquor cabinet he doesn't care what time it is, he just pulls a glass and starts pouring.

Jedao huffs a breath, but slumps into the couch and lets Varker get himself some space along with a drink.

"If you'd been an ass about it, I'd have just taken them off you. It's okay. But also can I have a vodka."

"I thought about it. But then I wasnt drunk or mad enough to actually pick a fight with you on purpose." He knows what you can do Jedao.

He takes a long pull from his glass before grabbing Norton's Vodka and pouring something more appropriate than what he'd given himself, "you want anything with it?"

"Plain soda water, if you have it?"

He likes the bubbles.

"If you had, I would have been aggravated about it. But it wouldn't have been the end of the world. And also, you didn't."

He wrinkles what's left of his nose at the thought of a plain vodka soda, but then hes drinking straight bourbon so he shouldn't judge.

He'll root around in Norton's fridge for a minute before he finds something close enough and brings it back for Jedao.

"Again, it could have been. But it didn't so I suppose kings to you, Jedao."

"Oh, wolfshit. Tell me how it could have been the end of the world, Varker," Jedao dares him. He's smiling as he takes his drink, scoots a little to give Varker space to sit back down.

Varker gives him a look as he flops back down on the settee, sprawling this time the way that he does when Norton sits on it next to him after hes claimed it for himself, trying to cross his legs and settle them across Jedao's lap.

"If you got so mad at me you used your stupid gravity manipulation powers in the exact wrong spot on the barge, it could open a wormhole and with the bullshit that is the barge, rip the multiverse or what ever the hell it is, to shreds." He takes a casual sip of his drink.

"Obviously ending the world."

"You can't make me that mad, bitch," Jedao grumbles, rolling his eyes, draping a companionable arm over Varker's legs, unmistakable welcome. "You're the wrong kind of fucked-up scientist. And even if you could, she wouldn't let me do that kind of damage."

He sips his vodka tonic and gazes at Varker, exasperated but fond.

"Anyway, kings to me indeed. What you did choose counts for a lot more than what you thought about, in my book."

"Dont challenge me like that, I might take it." He returns with a smile of his own, though he does take some offense to 'fucked up scientist'.

His mood starts to sour more as he rolls the last statement around in his head.

"One correct choice in a sea of terrible ones doesn't tip the scale, but what ever you say."

"Stay out of the mind control game and you'll stay my favorite weird scientist," Jedao promises. He drops a light kiss on Varker's knee, through his pants. It's not remotely erotic; there's a silliness to it that emphasizes the earnest affection.

"And a bunch of terrible choices doesn't make this one matter any less, either."

"Oh, gross. I'm not about to sink so low." That sort of shit was Birkov’s bag now, and he prefers it over here, not on the side of bat shit crazy.

His foot shifts, nudging his ribs at the kiss but its a light jab if that.

"I am not in the mood to be accused of goodness in the grand scheme of the world, Jedao. Let me just be an ass and I can breathe easier."
